The Ninfa Lake is 1503 m on the northeastern slopes of Monte Cimone.
The enchanting lake, surrounded by beech and conifer woods, is the starting point for various walks and excursions.
Legend
It seems that the name derives from a legend according to which, one day, a young hunter who arrived on the shores of the lake was fascinated by an incredible apparition. A beautiful girl with green eyes appeared on the other shore of the lake. She looked at the young man, smiled, and walked away, disappearing suddenly.
The young man ran after her frantically, in a vain pursuit.
He asked for news of the charcoal burners he met. "It is the nymph who is combing her hair in the sun," "Woe to anyone who falls in love with her: he is lost!", The charcoal burners used to say.
The next day, the wonderful creature appeared to him again on the other side. This happens for several days until the young man, no longer enduring that cruel game, shouts his love to her.
With her transparent green eyes, the nymph looked at him for a long time and magically threw an iridescent crystal bridge over the lake, sending the young man a sweet song.
The hunter rushed to meet the beauty when suddenly the bridge dissolved halfway, and the girl's promised kiss tasted like the lake's icy waters.
Some charcoal burners claimed the girl repented and dived into the icy waters.
Since then, two nearby clouds have sometimes been seen floating on the water's surface.
