Grotta del Fico (Ogliastra) - Baunei (OG) - Gulf of Orosei - Goats on the rocks - Sardinia

The Grotta del Fico are coastal caves located between the beaches of Cala Mariolu and Cala Biriala.

The name derives from the fact that initially when the cave was discovered, a fig tree was positioned right in front of the entrance.

The entrance to the cavity is located on a cliff overlooking the sea, a feature that has kept the Grotta del Fico away from man for millennia.

The first professional cavers arrived at the cave in 1957 and, during their exploration, discovered that seals inhabited these places. To protect them, they installed a gate at the entrance to the cave, which remained closed for decades.

Only in the early 2000s did the Baunese Speleological

Society decide to take care of the Grotta del Fico and set up a modern and safe tourist route. Today, this wonder of nature is finally accessible to everyone.

Since 2003, the Grotta del Fico has been open to guided tours.
