Fondi (LT) - Lazio

Fondi is located on the homonymous plain, a short distance from the Monti Aurunci Natural Park, where more than 50 wild orchids are born, and many specimens of mammals live.

What to visit

The majestic Caetani Baronial Castle, the city's symbol, was built between the 13th and 15th centuries.

The fortress comprises a square tower, a cylindrical tower with prominent battlements grafted, and an adjacent rectangular fortress with three cylindrical towers. A wooden bridge connects the two bodies. Given the excellent state of conservation, the castle is open to visitors.

Another monumental building in Fondi is the Palazzo del Principe, next to the Castle.

The most characteristic part of the building is the decoration of the windows, single and double lancet windows, ogive and arched, two internal in the courtyard and two external, formed in the upper part by a slab of soft stone, worked with fretwork to look like a vibrant embroidery.

Among the religious buildings, the Cathedral of San Pietro is the most important in the city.

Dating back to the 12th century, the cathedral was built on ancient pre-Roman structures. Inside is the tomb of Cristoforo Caetani, a bishop's chair in marble, and a pulpit decorated with Cosmatesque mosaics from the 13th century.

Continuing the walk, we arrive at the historic district of Olmo Perino, the Giudea, where the plague struck a Jewish community in 1963.

During the epidemic, the "Casa degli Spiriti" building was used as a hospital.

You cannot miss a stop on the shores of Lake Fondi, where you can observe migratory birds.
